Insurance Coverage

I am in-network for individual therapy only with the following insurances in Texas and Florida:

Texas

  • Aetna

  • Cigna / Evernorth

  • Quest Behavioral Health

  • Carelon Behavioral Health

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts

  • Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey

  • Independence Blue Cross Pennsylvania (Virtual Network)

Florida

  • Aetna

  • Cigna / Evernorth

  • Quest Behavioral Health

  • Carelon Behavioral Health

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts

  • Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey

  • Independence Blue Cross Pennsylvania (Virtual Network)

Please note: Insurance does not cover couples therapy, extended sessions, EMDR intensives, or other specialized services. These are private pay only because insurance companies set strict guidelines about what they consider “medically necessary” and unfortunately, that rarely includes relational work, preventative care, or longer, more focused sessions.

Verifying Your Benefits

When contacting your insurance company, ask:

  1. Do I have outpatient mental health coverage for individual therapy?

  2. What is my copay or coinsurance per session?

  3. Do I have a deductible, and how much of it has been met?

  4. How many sessions are covered per year?

  5. What is the coverage amount per therapy session?

  6. Is approval required from my primary care physician?

Why Many Clients Choose Private Pay

Insurance can be helpful, but it comes with limitations. Private pay puts you in full control of your therapy.

Benefits of private pay therapy include:

  • Greater privacy – Your personal information and diagnosis are not shared with your insurance company, employers, life insurance, and/or legal proceedings.

  • More treatment freedom – Insurance may limit how long or how often you can be seen or stop covering care if they think you’ve improved. With private pay, you and your therapist decide what works best and when therapy ends.

  • No formal diagnosis required – Therapy can support personal & relational growth, life transitions, stress, and more, even without a mental health diagnosis.

  • Wider range of services – Work on preventative care like premarital counseling, emotional health, couples sessions, extended EMDR sessions, or other issues not typically covered by insurance.

Reaching out now is a gift to your future self, helping you avoid the heavier emotional, relational, and financial toll of waiting until things feel unmanageable.

Out-of-Network & Superbill Options

If your insurance plan allows out-of-network benefits, you may still receive partial reimbursement:

  1. Pay for sessions at the time of service.

  2. Receive a superbill (itemized receipt with billing codes).

  3. Submit it to your insurance company or use Thrizer to handle submissions automatically.

  4. Many clients recover 50–80% of their session cost.

Using superbills or Thrizer makes private pay more accessible while still giving you flexibility, privacy, and access to specialized care. For more information about how Thrizer works, click here.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) are widely accepted for therapy services. Many clients use these accounts to cover session costs, ESA letter documentation, coaching, or extended sessions. Check with your HSA or FSA provider to confirm eligibility and ensure proper documentation.

  • Yes. We work with organizations, schools, universities, businesses, and churches to provide consulting, workshops, keynotes, panels, or webinars on mental health, wellness, and personal growth. We also support other professionals, such as therapists who are starting their own private practice or associates seeking guidance. Rates vary depending on the service, duration, audience size, and travel. We provide custom proposals to match your organization’s or group’s needs, including preparation, materials, and follow-up support.

  • Private pay gives you the freedom to fully invest in your mental health, relationships, and personal growth. Unlike insurance, it allows you to choose the session length and frequency that best fits your needs. You also have access to specialized services such as EMDR, couples therapy, extended sessions, and therapy intensives.

Private pay provides greater privacy because your personal information and diagnoses are not shared with insurance companies or employers. It also removes limits imposed by insurance, such as coverage caps, session restrictions, or requirements for a formal mental health diagnosis.

Many clients find that private pay enables faster, more meaningful progress because therapy is tailored entirely to their goals. You and your therapist can decide what works best and when therapy ends, rather than following insurance rules.

Choosing private pay is an investment in yourself. It supports consistent, intentional work designed to create lasting change in your life and relationships.

  • Most insurance plans do not cover couples therapy or marriage counseling because insurance focuses on individual mental health treatment that is considered medically necessary.

    Insurance companies typically require:

    1. An identified client

    2. A mental health diagnosis

    3. Evidence that treatment directly addresses that diagnosis

Couples therapy focuses on the health and dynamics of the relationship rather than an individual’s mental health diagnosis. While relational concerns are real and important, they are generally not classified as medical conditions under insurance plans.

There is a diagnostic code, Z63.0 (“problems in relationship with spouse or partner”), that could be used for couples therapy, but most insurers do not cover it because it is not considered medically necessary. Ethically, therapists avoid using other codes just to get coverage. This ensures honesty and compliance with insurance guidelines.

Even if one or both partners have a diagnosed mental health condition, couples therapy addresses issues such as reducing conflict, improving communication, and increasing connection rather than treating an individual’s symptoms.

This is why couples therapy, marriage counseling, and other relationship-focused sessions are private pay only. Private pay allows you to fully focus on your relationship without the limitations of insurance coverage.

  • Yes. If you have out-of-network benefits, we can provide a detailed superbill that includes all the necessary billing codes and documentation to submit to your insurance company. Reimbursement is dependent on your plan, but many clients receive partial reimbursement for private pay sessions. We also support clients using services like Thrizer to simplify the submission process.

  • Yes. Currently, we accept insurance in Texas and Florida. Private pay sessions are available for clients in South Carolina, Idaho, Vermont, Texas, Florida, and other states, depending on licensure and Telehealth regulations.

  • Standard individual and couples sessions are 50-53 minutes. Extended sessions are 80 minutes, ideal for EMDR, couples, or intensive work. Therapy intensives and coaching sessions can be scheduled for longer blocks, depending on your goals.

  • We require at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule appointments. Sessions canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice are billed at the full rate. This policy ensures fairness and allows others to access available appointment times. We also understand emergencies do happen, so if you are able to reschedule within the same week the fee may be waived depending on case by case situation.
